Some antsy liberals are worried that all but declared California gubernatorial candidate, Jerry Brown, might be California's next Martha Coakley, while Republican Steve Poizner's campaign is calling Meg Whitman the next Martha Coakley.
That could be something we hear a lot this cycle, no matter the geography*.
The liberal blog Calitics:
Jerry Brown seems to be doing all he can do to become the next Martha Coakley. Like the Massachusetts Attorney General, California's Attorney General seems to believe he doesn't yet have to run an actual campaign.
Meanwhile, Meg Whitman is not only spending a lot of money, but spending it wisely. She is building a strong campaign staff, a good field operation, and airing some rather effective radio ads across the state that make her sound like a soft moderate.....
Meanwhile, last Friday the Poizner campaign sent out a press release, claiming it's Meg Whitman, who's implementing the "Martha Coakley campaign strategy".
They took a Boston Globe interview with Coakley aides and suggested substituting Whitman's name.
“They [Coakley's aides] described a campaign that was too sure of its own success … And by many accounts, they paid insufficient attention to the bread and butter of political campaigning… getting out and meeting voters.
Brown and Coakley also ran very different campaigns. Over the six-week race, Coakley did very little retail politicking, relying on endorsements from mayors, lawmakers, and unions. She went for a weeklong stretch, from Dec. 23 to Dec. 30, during which she held no public events.”
*Speaking of this election cycle -- the highlight of last week, from Mr. Newt Gingrich:
.... what we're trying to do at American Solutions, which is reach out to all 513,000 elected offices.
He included "county commissioners" in his list.
