I hope not. Only 2 presidents have gained seats in a midterm election during their first term: Roosevelt and GW Bush, who was riding the 9/11 wave of popularity.
I agree with you. I could be wrong, but I don't think the projections take into account all the intangibles we're dealing with (plus, history like you say).
