"His support has collapsed"

Jonathan Martin reports that SC Senators Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham, as well as Rep. Gresham Barrett, called Mark Sanford today to have a talk about the politics of his affair.

A top Republican said:

"His support has collapsed."

Putting things into context, it seems Sanford's tell-all yesterday might have, indeed, been his bid to win some redemption through honesty.

Sanford's spokesman, Joel Sawyer:

“The governor has given a full and truthful account, and he is finished discussing this matter."

Well, un-redeem that.

The "full and truthful account" hurt him yesterday and today, but it was probably his only shot. The damning details would've come out anyway, and there's always the chance the truth could have set him free.

But this time, it seems like the truth might have only set him free to pursue a relationship with his lover.

It's better than Romeo and Juliet got.
