Helps to know the Governor: Barbour's Press Sec gets pay raise

This kind of stuff doesn't make or break a state; but it can a Governor.

Gov. Haley Barbour's new press secretary is earning $16,800 more than his former one, prompting some criticism because of an economic downturn that is forcing budget cuts.

Barbour's reply?

The governor's staff did not return phone calls and e-mail messages Friday.

A Watchdog:

David Williams, vice president of policy for the Washington-based watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste, said "in the grand scheme of things, ($16,800) is not going to balance a budget or solve problems.

"But it's pretty representative of what the problem is in government. Areas they can cut, they don't," he added.
